Design & Implementation: Ulster County Government wanted a friendly site that would increase
access to public information while promoting county tourism. Content of the site was based
on the annual Ulster County Tourism Guide and the Ulster County Government Directory.
The source files for the searchable tourism directory were
provided in WordPerfect text files. I&S parsed the text files into a comma delimited
file which was ported into a FoxPro relational database file to add new search fields. The
completed database was converted to a flat file format for import into Web Catalogue®,
which provides extremely fast data retrieval by maintaining a memory resident file in the
server RAM.
I&S is currently developing a web based remote update feature which
will provide the Ulster County Tourism office with the ability to immediately update the
database as they receive changes.
The county area maps
are based on public domain source files made available through the census bureau. The
tourism database search
results include a key map that links each tourism listing to the appropriate area map.
Hosting: The
Ulster County Government is hosted on an EMI UNIX server located in Schenectady, NY, the
tourism database resides on an I&S Windows NT server located in Kingston NY.

Design & Implementation: Michael Shamansky, Booksellers (MSB) sells imported fine art books
and publications to libraries, colleges, and universities. MSB wished to augment their
print catalogue and bulletins with a searchable
online database. Graphics were minimized to accommodate low resolution monitors and
low bandwidth modems.
MSB maintains its database of more than 5,000 titles in Condor, a legacy
DOS database. The database records were imported into FoxPro as an ASCII file. Working
within FoxPro, I&S extracted information from the source files to create additional
data fields. The enhanced database was converted to a flat file format for import into Web
Catalogue®, which provides extremely fast data retrieval by maintaining a memory resident
file in the server RAM.
Maintenance: MSB continues to use Condor database for their day
to day operations, routinely updating the web database using an I&S developed
conversion program. The program automatically converts the data records to FoxPro,
extracts information to create additional search fields, and ports the records to Web
Catalogue for FTP transfer to the server.
Hosting: Michael
Shamansky Bookseller is hosted on an I&S PowerMac running Webstar with Web
Catalogue by Pacific Coast Software.
